Welcome to your English Proficiency Assessment for OET Candidates

 

Timeline:

You are required to complete the online portion of this assessment within 25 minutes. After that, you will take part in a short speaking test, which will take approximately 5 minutes. In total, the full assessment will take around 30 minutes to complete.

 

Purpose

  • Evaluate candidates’ English skills at basic to intermediate levels.
  • Identify if candidates are ready for OET preparation.
  • Advise candidates with very basic English to first join a General English program before starting OET.

 

Assessment Structure

This assessment is divided into five sections, each designed to evaluate your ability to use basic English in different skills such as listening, reading, writing, speaking, and grammar/vocabulary. The purpose of this assessment is to help you—and us—determine whether you are ready to begin focused preparation for the OET.

Why is this important?

The OET is a specialized language test created for healthcare professionals. It goes far beyond everyday English and requires a solid foundation in grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and communication skills. Building these basics first is essential: without them, preparing for the OET can be frustrating, time-consuming, and costly.

By completing this assessment, you will receive clear guidance on your current level. If you already have the required foundation, you can confidently move forward with OET preparation. If not, you will be advised to strengthen your general English first—ensuring that when you start OET training, your progress will be faster, smoother, and more effective.

 

Section 1 – Listening (Basic Comprehension)

  • Objective: Check ability to understand short spoken passages.
  • Format:
    • Part A: Identify main ideas from short dialogues (e.g., doctor–patient, receptionist–caller).
    • Part B: Listen to short announcements/instructions and answer multiple-choice questions.

 

Section 2 – Reading (Basic to Intermediate Comprehension)

  • Objective: Assess reading comprehension at a level necessary for OET study.
  • Format:
    • Part A: Short factual texts (e.g., hospital notice, appointment slip). Candidates answer direct questions.
    • Part B: Slightly longer passages (e.g., simplified medical article) with multiple-choice and matching questions.

 

Section 3 – Writing (Sentence & Paragraph Level)

  • Objective: Evaluate ability to produce clear, accurate written English.
  • Format:
    • Part A: Sentence construction tasks (e.g., complete a sentence correctly, use proper verb tense).
    • Part B: Short guided writing (e.g., write 3–4 sentences about daily routine, or describe a picture).
  • Skills Tested:
    • Grammar (basic tenses, articles, prepositions).
    • Sentence cohesion.
    • Ability to write a simple but clear paragraph.

 

Section 4– Grammar & Vocabulary (Diagnostic Test)

  • Objective: Test core language knowledge needed before starting OET.
  • Format:
    • Multiple-choice grammar questions (e.g., verb tenses, subject-verb agreement).
    • Vocabulary matching exercises (common daily words + basic medical terms like “fever,” “appointment,” “medicine”).

 

Section 5– Speaking (Basic Interaction)

  • Objective: Check clarity, fluency, and ability to hold a basic conversation.
  • Format:
    • Part A: Personal introduction (name, work, studies, daily life).
    • Part B: Role-play of common situations (e.g., asking for directions, explaining a simple process).

Note: Thespeaking test will only be conducted when you take the assessment in person at one of our partner centers.
