Setting: General Practice Clinic
Patient: A 26-year-old university student experiencing frequent nosebleeds.
Background: The patient has come in after experiencing frequent nosebleeds over the past two months, often occurring spontaneously or during the night. The episodes usually stop on their own after a few minutes, but the frequency has increased. The patient reports dry nasal passages and recent cold weather, but is now concerned that there may be an underlying health issue. They are also unsure whether they are managing the bleeding correctly and want to know how to prevent it from happening again.
Task:
- Ask about the frequency, duration, and triggers of the nosebleeds. Inquire about any recent trauma, medications, or other symptoms.
- Explain the common causes of recurrent nosebleeds, such as dry air, nose-picking, minor trauma, allergies, or upper respiratory infections. Reassure the patient that it is often not serious.
- Discuss how to manage nosebleeds, including correct first-aid steps, using humidifiers, applying nasal lubricants, and avoiding irritants.
- Provide advice on when to seek medical help, such as if the bleeding is heavy, frequent, or difficult to stop, or if it’s accompanied by other symptoms (e.g., bruising or fatigue).
- Reassure the patient and offer follow-up if symptoms persist.
